I began to paint with water-soluble oils at the suggestion of my mentor, Irving Boker. I had been studying with Irv for a few years and it was a logical progression to go to the oils. He painted with the traditional oils, but I could not tolerate the solvents so we tried the water-soluble oils from Holbein.
I did my first plein air paintings with Irv over in Stony Brook. He loved to be outdoors and he was such a great artist. Even though my time with him was short, I am still thrilled and privileged to have known him.
Plein Air
Painting en plein air gives me a great deal of pleasure.
I enjoy the outdoors and try to capture its beauty. Unlike the still life, plein air is a fleeting moment, to be enveloped in a heartbeat. The light changes, the weather changes, as an artist it is a challenge to get that impression just right.
